The Internet, sometimes called a network of networks, is based on a simple principle: the transfer of information from one computer to another. To do this each computer needs an identification called an "Internet Protocol Address" or an "IP Address". It is similar to a telephone number or street address. An IP address is personally identifiable information that is automatically captured by another computer when a communications link is created over the Internet. This includes visiting web pages, sending or receiving e-mail, going to newsgroups or using chat rooms. Often, a user's IP address is automatically sent to a third party when they visit a Web site using a banner ad network or, in some circumstances, open an e-mail message. What is the format of IP address :

An IP address always consists of 4 blocks of numbers, separated by periods. Each block has a possible range of 0 to 255, which means that each block has 256 possible values. For example, the IP address looks like this.

Out of these addresses, 3 ranges have been reserved for specific purposes. The first address belongs to the default network and is called the broadcast address. The third address is loopback address, and it refers to your own machine or computer.

What are the IP address standards :

There are 2 standards for IP addresses to be used on any network-

i) IP version 4 (IPv4):

Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) This is the fourth version of Internet Protocol (IP), which is used to identify the device of the network. IPv4 addresses are 32 bits long and support 4,294,967,296 addresses (although many of these are reserved for special purposes, such as and This is a common example of an IPv4 address. ii) IP version 6 (IPv6):

Due to the popular development of the Internet, a new version of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) was developed out of concern about the possible loss of IPv4 addresses in the future. This is the new and improved version of IPv4. It is also known as IPng (IP new generation).

Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is 128 bits long. Therefore, it supports 2^128 Internet addresses, which is equivalent to 340.282.366.920.938. addresses. That's a lot of addresses and they are more than enough to keep the internet operational for a very long time.

What is Public and Private IP Addresses:

i) Private IP Addresses :

When multiple computers or devices are connected to each other, either by cable or wirelessly, they form a private network. Each device within this network is assigned a unique IP address to share files and resources. The IP addresses of all the devices on this network are called private addresses.

ii) Public IP addresses :

Public IP address is the one that is given by the ISP (Internet Service Provider). This allows your home network to be recognized by the outside world. This IP address is unique throughout the Internet.

Public IP address can be static or dynamic. A static public IP address does not change and is mainly used for a service on the Internet (such as to access an IP camera, ftp server, email server, or remote access to a computer) or web hosting. You have to buy it from ISP.

Dynamic IP address, on the other hand, takes the available IP address and changes each time you connect to the Internet. Most Internet users have a dynamic IP address for their computer, which is truncated when the Internet is disconnected and a new IP address is given when reconnected.
